Nandi is a captivating visual exploration of devotion and divine connection. Rendered in a contemporary, semi-abstract style, this painting depicts the stoic yet dynamic form of Nandi, the loyal bull of Lord Shiva. The bold sumi-e strokes in black and grey evoke the texture of Shiva’s sacred bhasm (ash), while the copper highlights imbue the form with a sense of divinity and reverence. The posture of Nandi is serene and static, seated in quiet anticipation of service to the Lord. Yet, the mark-making technique introduces a sense of movement, as if the form vibrates with latent energy. This interplay between stillness and motion embodies Shiva’s maya (illusion).

The mark-making style creates a textured, layered form that visually shifts between abstraction and recognition, engaging the viewer’s imagination and inviting contemplation. The interplay of sumi-e ink’s bold, fluid strokes with the copper ink brings the painting to life, echoing the paradoxical nature of devotion—grounded yet transcendent. The force of the strokes movement ensures that the viewer’s eye never rests, reinforcing the theme of dynamic stillness, a hallmark of Shiva’s illusory reality.
